Big Data for the SQL Ninja
As more enterprises start implementing big data solutions, how does the DBA support these efforts and do they have the skills and knowledge to integrate big data solutions into your current architecture and processes? This demo-filled session has two purposes; first, to help DBAs understand how to apply their existing SQL Server skills in understanding and utilizing HDInsight and related technologies. Big data technologies don’t need to be intimidating, and this session will help DBAs see how they can easily apply their current skill when working with big data. Second, this session will show how SQL Server and HDInsight be used together to create solutions to solve big data problems without the complexities of massive learning curves and using technologies DBAs are already familiar with. We’ll look at technologies that make working with big data much less daunting, including HiveQL and Sqoop, both of which don’t require a rocket science degree to use.

His passion for data technologies brought him to Microsoft in 2011 which has allowed him to travel all over the globe evangelizing SQL Server and Microsoft’s cloud data services. Prior to Microsoft Scott was one of the first 4 SQL Azure MVPs, and even though those don’t exist anymore, he still claims it. Scott continues to look for ways to help developers grok the benefits of cloud computing.

In this session, Vern will dispel some NOLOCK (or READUNCOMMITTED) myths and demonstrate some of the data errors that can result from using it. After this session you will probably want to eliminate all of your NOLOCK in production code.
Vern (LinkedIn | Twitter) is an independent SQL Server consultant and contract trainer in Portland, OR. He has attained MCSE, MCITP (both Administration and Development), and MCT certifications, among others. Vern has been working with databases since 1992, and has worked with SQL Server since version 4.21a. He provides broad technical SQL Server skills gained from the mixture of academic and practical experiences acquired from his classroom instructing and consulting contracts.
