Advanced Statistics Techniques for Advanced Query Performance
Slow queries? Want to speed them up? Query optimization statistics are probably the most important information that the optimizer uses to determine how to execute a query. But the statistics that are created with an index, or by default on a column when referenced in a predicate, are not always enough information for the optimizer to make “good enough” plan choices. That’s when you need to step in and manage statistics yourself. In this session, after a brief overview of what statistics are, we’ll explore how creating filtered statistics, creating statistics on multiple columns, or overriding the default maintenance of statistics can help.
Vern Rabe is an independent SQL Server consultant and contract trainer in Portland, OR, and leader of the Oregon Data Community (PASS) user group. He has attained MCSE, MCITP (both Administration and Development), and MCT certifications, among others. Vern has been passionate about databases since 1992 and has worked with SQL Server since version 4.21a (ouch). He provides broad technical SQL Server knowledge gained from the mixture of academic and practical experiences. Vern often presents technical sessions at user group meetings, SQLSaturdays, and PASS Summit.

DevOps and Databases: An Intro
DevOps has quickly become one of the most effective methods of Managing and Deploying a rapid and responsive release cycle. And too often, it seems like just another ‘buzzword’ to understand and sort out. In this brief overview, we’ll examine:
• Just what does DevOps mean for the Database Developer and Administrator?
• How does it impact and change ‘normal’ database operations?
• What do you need to know?
• What tools and services will be required?
• What are the Tips and Traps for incorporating databases into a DevOps approach to deployment management?
Arnie is a Microsoft Data Platform (and SQL Server) MVP (for 14 years), a Subject Matter Expert (SME) working on SQL Server training courses and the development of the Microsoft Certification Exams. He was a Microsoft Certified Trainer for over a decade, and has served a technical editor for several publishers, including multiple SQL Server titles in the Microsoft Official Curriculum, and has served as adjunct faculty at both University and Community College. Clients include Fortune 500 and Multi-National companies, Federal and State agencies, foreign governments, nationally recognized training facilities, and local enterprises –both public and private. Arnie is a Senior Moderator on the MSDN and TechNet SQL Server related Forums, a founding member of the TechNet Wiki Governing Council, founder of the Oregon SQL User group (now the Oregon Data Community), and has been a lead facilitator for SQLSaturday Oregon for the past eleven years.
